Almost Time to Slow Down

This has always been one of my favorite views from the mountain in North East El Paso. It is extra special to me because, from this angle, you cannot see the neighborhoods encroaching on the foothills. So the view remains unspoiled.

One Year Ago

It was about this time last year that Pearl and I took a trip to El Paso for the Andress High School 50th anniversary celebration. We took the opportunity to revisit some of my old haunts and the picture above comes from one of those day trips.

I have literally hundreds of miles of experience hiking in these mountains. When I think of El Paso as home, my regular trips up into the mountains are the biggest part of that. I remember one time, sitting in about the same spot as where this picture was taken from, and watching a mule deer come over the pass, through the bush as if it was nothing. It would have taken me thirty minutes to travel as far as the deer did in only five.

New Menu Layout

For those of you who have been keeping up with this blog, you will notice that I updated the menus so that you can access each of the series directly from there. There is so much I enjoy about the blogging architecture, but when it comes to navigation, the default settings are not very helpful. So I decided to create something of a go between so that people don’t need to go looking for the next posts in a series or to jump around if they want.

Almost Time to Slow Down

When I started this blog, I committed to blog extra heavily for the first year in order to establish a presence. Well, that year is soon coming to an end and the posts will be slowing down as a result. This is necessary because it does take a great deal of time away from my other work.

For this past year, I made a commitment to a fixed number of posts per week. I will continue to write each day as I have been, but instead of committing to a fixed number, I will be committing to a fixed amount of time. And that amount of time will be considerably shorter than what I’ve been doing so far. My plan, as of August 1st is to only post when an article is ready and not change my daily schedule in order to make a deadline.

For that reason, I can’t say how often the posts will come up. It will probably be erratic. The reason I didn’t originally write and publish that way was because people don’t like to visit sites where it looks like the blogger has disappeared! How many blogs have I bookmarked that haven’t changed in three or four years? I didn’t want to appear to be one of those bloggers and I figured a full year of lots of posts would be the evidence to prove that I haven’t been choked by the proverbial weeds. 😐

That said, there are book projects in the works right now that this blog has been sapping precious time away from. So I’m ready to cut back.

Let me know what you think. As always, I enjoy hearing what everyone has to say.
