Angels from the Realms of Glory

Number twenty in our Trumpet Hymn Duet book is Angels from the Realms of Glory. Yes, I know this is most well known as a Christmas song. However, the tune, “Regent Square”, is actually used for a number of hymns that are not Christmas carols. All of the following hymn titles were written to “Regent Square” and share this melody with Angels from the Realms of Glory

  • Praise the Lord God, All You Nations
  • Glory be to God the Father
  • Christ is Made the Sure Foundation
  • In His Temple Now Behold Him
  • Lord, Dismiss Us with Your Blessing
  • Jesus Comes with Clouds Descending
  • Light’s Abode, Celestial Salem
  • Saints of God, the Dawn Is Brightening
  • God, the Lord, a King Remaineth
  • Look, Ye Saints! The Sight is Glorious
  • Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven
  • Holy Father, Great Creator
  • Praise to the, O Lord, We Render
  • Lord, Through Changing Days, Unchanging
  • O, Thou God of My Salvation
  • My Redeemer
  • Savior Come thy Saints are Waiting
  • Precious Word from God in Heaven
  • Jesus Took the Babes and Blessed Them
  • Sing, My Tongue, the Saviour’s Battle
  • Jesus Came, the Heaven’s Adoring
  • Zion Stands with Hills Surrounded

Then you might ask, why am I using Angels from the Realms of Glory as the title if I am using it as part of the Trumpet Hymn Duet series? Well, mostly because people recognize that title more than the rest.

I think probably the most popular other hymn using Regent Square is Christ is Made the Sure Foundation. I recall singing that one often when I was a child.

I do plan on making an index in the back of the book with alternative titles when they are appropriate. Well, that’s the plan for now.

About the Arrangement

First Page Sample Sheet Music

For these last two duets in this Trumpet Hymn Duets series, I’m trying to revisit some of the techniques that I used in the beginning. In a sense, you could say I’m reining it all back in after the past two duets which pushed the boundaries of the series just a little bit.

The skill level of the arrangement is at the Trumpet Apprentice Level. Most of these Trumpet Duet Hymns have been at the Trumpet Apprentice Level. This makes them just difficult enough for most trumpet players to have fun with them, but not so difficult that they cannot be used in public.

Trumpet duets have always been a source of satisfaction for trumpet players. I remember many times throughout my career and during my education when I met with friends and spent an entire evening playing duets together. This is one of the reasons why I write these duets. I’ve been composing trumpet duets since I was in middle school.

Angels from the Realms of Glory is one of those that I think trumpet players will enjoy to play with their friends. They can do this in the comfort of their homes, or they can play it at church where the congregation can enjoy their music, too.

You Play First Chair Free Trumpet Play-Along

We made a free trumpet play-along video for this arrangement so you can take it for a test drive.

Well, that’s how I’ve been saying it. That’s not really the reason I make the play-along videos. The You Play First Chair video series is for those trumpet students who don’t have ensembles to rehearse with.

I do all of my own recordings, so I have access to the raw sound files. I drop the first trumpet part from the mix, reroute the click to the first trumpet track, then remix the project. I have to remix because leaving out the first trumpet disturbs the balance. So yeah, this is something I could offer and decided it was worth the effort to make these videos available. It adds about an extra hour to my publishing task list, but I think it is worth it.

Angels from the Realms of Glory Lyrics

I am sharing the lyrics here because this is the title I chose for this duet. Please keep in mind that there are dozens of lyrics that go with this tune, not just the Christmas carol, Angels from the Realms of Glory.

  1. Angels from the realms of glory,
    Wing your flight o’er all the earth;
    Ye who sang creation’s story
    Now proclaim Messiah’s birth.
    • Refrain:
      Come and worship, come and worship,
      Worship Christ, the newborn King.
  2. Shepherds, in the field abiding,
    Watching o’er your flocks by night,
    God with us is now residing;
    Yonder shines the infant light:
  3. Sages, leave your contemplations,
    Brighter visions beam afar;
    Seek the great Desire of nations;
    Ye have seen His natal star.
  4. Saints, before the altar bending,
    Watching long in hope and fear;
    Suddenly the Lord, descending,
    In His temple shall appear.
  5. Sinners, wrung with true repentance,
    Doomed for guilt to endless pains,
    Justice now revokes the sentence,
    Mercy calls you; break your chains.
  6. Though an Infant now we view Him,
    He shall fill His Father’s throne,
    Gather all the nations to Him;
    Every knee shall then bow down:
  7. All creation, join in praising
    God, the Father, Spirit, Son,
    Evermore your voices raising
    To th’eternal Three in One.
