Faith is the Victory

This week’s Unadorned Trumpet Hymn is a beautifully descriptive, Christian “battle hymn”… and we need that! Of course, we live in a time that is hostile toward Christians and perhaps don’t understand what a Christian battle hymn is. We are not fighting battles of “flesh and blood” (Ephesians 6:12). In my opinion, most of the battles happen within our own minds.

When Jesus told the parable of the sewer, He spelled out different types of obstacles in our faith. Two of these, in my opinion, comprise the biggest of the “battles” we fight each day. The first one is temptation and the second is worry. We are in an epic fight against temptation and worry and concern are our greatest enemies.

I just felt I needed to make that clear. Yes, there are some occasions where the battle is more social. But in my experience, those are not the daily battles that we fight. In fact, I will even go so far as to say that, if you have been in the war all along, a veteran so to speak, then the more public battles are actually the easier ones to win.

If you have another way of looking at this, then I invite you to share your thoughts below.

Faith Is the Victory Lyrics

Here are the full lyrics for Faith Is the Victory:

  1. Encamped along the hills of light,
    Ye Christian soldiers, rise,
    And press the battle ere the night
    Shall veil the glowing skies.
    Against the foe in vales below
    Let all our strength be hurled;
    Faith is the victory, we know,
    That overcomes the world.
    • Refrain:
      Faith is the victory!
      Faith is the victory!
      Oh, glorious victory,
      That overcomes the world.
  2. His banner over us is love,
    Our sword the Word of God;
    We tread the road the saints above
    With shouts of triumph trod.
    By faith, they like a whirlwind’s breath,
    Swept on o’er every field;
    The faith by which they conquered death
    Is still our shining shield.
  3. On every hand the foe we find
    Drawn up in dread array;
    Let tents of ease be left behind,
    And onward to the fray.
    Salvation’s helmet on each head,
    With truth all girt about,
    The earth shall tremble ’neath our tread,
    And echo with our shout.
  4. To him that overcomes the foe,
    White raiment shall be giv’n;
    Before the angels he shall know
    His name confessed in heav’n.
    Then onward from the hills of light,
    Our hearts with love aflame,
    We’ll vanquish all the hosts of night,
    In Jesus’ conqu’ring name.
