Home Church Congregation

I wrote this piece in the style of a late 19th century Christian hymn. I apparently got the style just right because my wife says she thinks it’s a pre-existing hymn that I must have just copied in my subconscious or something.

Actually, I should clarify that Home Church Congregation started off in the style of a late 19th century Christian hymn. I later changed the style in the middle section to give it a little contrast.

What’s very interesting, to me, about this composition is that I heard the chromatic harmonies with the melody. I didn’t force those harmonies (I don’t often force harmonies anymore). These are very 19th century harmonies and I heard them when I heard the original melody. This is atypical. More often I hear the melody first, then I discover the harmonies later.

A Different Kind of Inspiration

I have written before on this blog about what I call “inspirations”. To me, an inspiration is a musical idea that “comes unbidden”. There is no craft at work in a true inspiration. You are just going about your day and all of a sudden an idea pops into your mind.

The difference with Home Church Congregation was that I was sort of looking for an inspiration. I wanted to write another one of these easy trumpet pieces (I will write more about that below), and I wanted it to be something reminiscent of the kind of music that might have been sung in a small country church 100 years ago.

First the term “home church” popped into my head. Then I began hearing the melody with its chromatic harmonies.

This was just a little less “unbidden” than usual.

It’s not unusual for me to received inspirations doing extremely mundane chores, like taking out the garbage or cutting the grass. I’ve even received several inspirations shopping at grocery stores. So this was very different.

Easy Trumpet Play Alongs

The reason I’ve been writing and publishing these easy trumpet pieces lately is to beef up the Trumpet Tyro section of the You Play First Chair video series. There need to be a lot more easy pieces in the lineup because of the infamous skill level pyramid. There are always far more less skilled trumpet players than there are virtuosi. So there is always more need for the easier sheet music than there is for very difficult sheet music.

I once heard a famous music publisher say that the reason we publish difficult music is to prove to the public that we have skills as a composer. The reason we publish easy music is to make money. I don’t agree with this. Not really. I try to write every piece of music with equal dignity. I don’t want people to be ashamed to perform my easier music. I want them to regard it as being just as legitimate as my most difficult pieces.

Home Church Congregation is a perfect example of what I’m talking about. This is a real piece of music. It’s a genuine composition and I would be honored if people performed it in public. It’s not just an educational work, just because it’s easy.

I have published some of these easy pieces on my digital albums and I have never been ashamed to have my name associated with those works. And some of them are getting far more streams on Spotify than any of my more difficult pieces.

Yes, you heard that right. There are people around the world listening to the music I wrote for beginning trumpet students. In fact, the biggest royalty check I ever got was when one of those beginner pieces was aired on the radio (or TV, I cant remember which) in France. And guess what that piece is called? “Blessings“! Ha ha ha…. Praise God!

So yes, I have spent this past month doing to simultaneous projects. I have been working on finishing up the trumpet hymn duets for the book. And I’ve been working on these easy trumpet pieces….mainly for the FREE trumpet play along series. We still sell the music, but the main intention is to make the pieces available in that series.

Yes I totally agree. I take the same attitude to the music I do with toddlers. We all need excellence no matter what our age or skill level. How do we ever learn excellence if all we get is low quality.

Also, in this current world we find ourselves in … with it’s chaos, uncertainty, and complexity … I find myself turning more and more to well written, well performed, “easy” music for rest … and rest is very important. We forget the Sabbath principle at our peril. The quality of our rest impacts directly on the quality of our work.
