Jesus Paid it All Trumpet Duet

Elvina M. Hall, John T. Grape
Arranged by Eddie Lewis

After an extended break from daily composing and arranging, I am doing a few more hymns before I dive back into the book projects. If I can get my act together, I might even try doing both each morning, instead of doing one at a time. I may actually need to do that just to stay on top of everything.

I like this duet, but I’m going to be honest. It didn’t flow at first. It got started fine, but the second verse sounded too similar to the first one, even though I was using a different approach. Once I got that figured out, the rest of it was fine and flowed like I’m used to.

The Hymn Duets

Part of what makes these hymns just a little more challenging than what I normally do is that I want them to be 100% appropriate for traditional church services. I am fully capable of writing progressive, modern arrangements. I believe our Tiger Music catalogue demonstrates this fact quite well. There are plenty of compositions and arrangements on our catalogue with very modern compositional techniques.

But I am also quite capable of writing more traditional sounding, very conservative arrangements. The way I compose, I don’t just spill out notes uncontrollably. When I plan to be more conservative with a composition or arrangement, I generally pull it off.

Part of how I make that work is to stay very close to the original harmonies of the hymn. That is not all of what I do to make these hymns work, but it is a big part of it.

I also avoid jazzed up rhythms. I have absolutely nothing against jazzed up rhythms on hymns. I have done my share of that. But I acknowledge that this is not always appropriate for music at a traditional church service.

In fact, what I try to do is maintain rhythmic integrity throughout the piece. In this Jesus Paid it All trumpet duet arrangement I added some sixteenth-notes in the last refrain, but they do not deter from the mood of the hymn.

Full Lyrics of the Hymn

  1. I hear the Savior say,
    “Thy strength indeed is small;
    Child of weakness, watch and pray,
    Find in Me thine all in all.”
    • Refrain:
      Jesus paid it all,
      All to Him I owe;
      Sin had left a crimson stain,
      He washed it white as snow.
  2. For nothing good have I
    Whereby Thy grace to claim;
    I’ll wash my garments white
    In the blood of Calv’ry’s Lamb.
  3. And now complete in Him,
    My robe, His righteousness,
    Close sheltered ’neath His side,
    I am divinely blest.
  4. Lord, now indeed I find
    Thy pow’r, and Thine alone,
    Can change the leper’s spots
    And melt the heart of stone.
  5. When from my dying bed
    My ransomed soul shall rise,
    “Jesus died my soul to save,”
    Shall rend the vaulted skies.
  6. And when before the throne
    I stand in Him complete,
    I’ll lay my trophies down,
    All down at Jesus’ feet.
