Stuck Gato – Free Improv 78
This week’s free improvisation video is different from all the rest. It’s different because I set out to not fall back into my comfort zone.
This reminds me of a story Dennis Dotson told me about being on the road with the Woody Herman band. He said that at one point the guys were having trouble being creative. They had fallen into a rut and would play almost the same identical solos on each performance.
Dennis came up with a solution. He said, if you just start on a different note, it forces you to be more creative for the rest of the solo.
That was sort of my approach on this video, except that I didn’t change the note, I changed the opening. Instead of starting with a long note, the way I normally do, I began the improvisation with a cascading line from D above high C. This jolted me out of the “pretty melody” comfort zone I had settled into.
