Vanilla Flats – Trumpet Improv 87

Eddie Lewis on Trumpet

Vanilla Flats

This is trumpet improvisation number 87. And that’s beginning to become a problem. Ha ha ha!!! I now I shouldn’t be thinking this way, but I struggle to come up with new approaches to these improvisations.

On the day I recorded this, I was exhausted. I didn’t want to have to try as hard to be creative, so I decided to limit my improvisation only to notes in the key of C (B flat concert).

That’s why I called the improvisation “Vanilla Flats”. There is an expression among musicians to describe something that is unremarkable and even boring… we say it was “B flat vanilla.” I didn’t want to call this improvisation “B flat vanilla”, so the title Vanilla Flats popped into my mind. So I stuck with it.
