What a Friend We Have in Jesus

What a Friend We Have in Jesus was always one of my favorite hymns when I was growing up. It was the idea of Jesus being my friend the led me to Him in the first place. We grew up in church, but for a long stretch when I was little, we rarely lived anywhere for longer than six months.
I didn’t know I needed a friend. I mean, what does a little kid know of those things? I just knew, when Jesus was described to me as someone I would “open the door of my heart” to, who would be my companion for the rest of my life, I just knew I needed that.
So yes, the hymn, What a Friend We Have in Jesus, always reminded me of this type of relationship that I have with Him, Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior….and my friend.
Peace We Often Forfeit
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer! What a Friend We Have in Jesus by Joseph M. Scriven
Peace we often forfeit, because we forget that Jesus is our best friend!
This is an important part of the hymn. How often do we suffer angst just because we forget that our best friend is not only waiting to hear all of our troubles, but also ready to do something about them?
Let this recording be a reminder to you today that Jesus is there for you. Just call on Him in prayer and He will listen.
He’s My Best Friend
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there. What a Friend We Have in Jesus by Joseph M. Scriven
As you get older, you learn what true friends are. They are rare. The process of learning about friendship this way can be painful. This becomes increasingly more true as you try to live a life that honors God. If you live that is “set apart”, friends of this world will reject you.
No problem. You have strength to persevere in Jesus Christ. He will give you solace and peace and strength.
